Wilmington police are trying to identify the man killed on West Third Street Wednesday night.
The man was the eighth person killed by gunfire in the city this year.
Shots rang out on West Third Street between Delamore Place and North Rodney Street around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday night. At least a dozen chalk circles, used to note where shell casings were found, were marked on the street where the man was killed.
A man who said he witnessed the killing Wednesday night said the shooter began firing at his target from down the street and continued firing as he approached. That man said the victim fell when hit and the shooter, when closer, shot him again on the ground.
The witness, who asked that his name not be used, said people in that neighborhood considered the victim a stranger and don't know his identity. Some residents said the victim had been hanging around the neighborhood for about a week before the shooting.
Police haven't detailed how they believe the shooting took place.
The Hilltop neighborhood homicide brought officers and K-9 officers to the scene, but police did not report that there had been an arrest or that a suspect had been identified.
Wilmington police said officers who arrived on the scene found the victim bleeding and gave him first aid, but the man was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Wilmington police said they're still trying to identify the man and notify his family.
