A 28-year-old man was shot Thursday afternoon in Dover and is in critical but stable condition, according to police.

The victim called the Dover Police Department at 5:17 p.m. and told them he had been shot and was driving himself to the hospital. Officers met the man near the Dover Post Office on Loockerman Street where he was taken by ambulance to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital with a single gunshot wound to the torso.

Investigators believe that the victim was engaged in a physical fight with an acquaintance inside of a home in the 100 block of Spruance Road. A handgun was displayed, and it is believed the men struggled with the weapon when a shot was fired.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Dover Police Department at (302) 736-7130. Callers may remain anonymous. Tips may also be submitted to law enforcement through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333 or online at www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com; a cash reward is possible for information leading to an arrest.
