Dover fugitive accused of raping 6-year-old arrested in South Carolina, awaiting extradition

Days after Dover police told South Carolina authorities they had arrested a 40-year fugitive who fled the state in 1979, South Carolina returned the favor, arresting a man accused of raping a 6-year-old in Dover.

Juan Hernandez, who had been wanted since October 2018, is awaiting extradition back to Delaware following his Thursday arrest.

He was taken into custody in Beaufort County, South Carolina, by federal authorities, Dover Police Department spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said.

According to Hoffman, in March 2011, the then-6-year-old reported to a school therapist that Hernandez had raped her.

Following a forensic interview and a "review of other evidence," detectives obtained a warrant for Hernandez's arrest.

Hernandez, who is not a legal resident, was thought to have possibly returned to Mexico.

The FBI said earlier this week, however, it had received a tip that Hernandez was in South Carolina, and he was arrested Thursday.
