A 34-year-old woman died in a crash Saturday evening when a truck driver passing traffic in a grassy area along the road, lost control and entered oncoming traffic, according to New Castle County police.

The driver of a 2005 Ford F-350 hit the woman's 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan on Levels Road near Route 301 in Middletown around 6 p.m., police said. In an attempt to pass a traffic jam in the south lanes of Route 301, the Ford F-350 drove in the grassy area along the road, police said.

While trying to merge back onto the road, the driver lost control of the truck and entered the north lanes of Levels Road where he hit the Grand Caravan, police said.

The woman and a 10-year-old passenger were taken to a hospital, police said. The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the 10-year-old received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver of the Ford F-350 was not injured in the crash, police said. Police did not say whether charges have been filed against the driver.

An investigation is ongoing. Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact Detective Brandon Harris at or (302) 573-2800.
