A 21-year-old man was arrested on assault and firearms charges after accidentally shooting his friend in the leg while playing with a gun in Newark earlier this month, police said Monday.

Newark police responded to the 100 block of Madison Drive around 7 p.m. July 3 after receiving reports that the victim, a 20-year-old man, had been taken to the hospital by private vehicle.

Police determined Nih’ki Price of Newark was in the same room of the house of the victim when he accidentally shot the victim in the leg. The victim was badly hurt.

Price initially lied to detectives about what happened, police said. He was arrested Friday and charged with assault, gun charges and giving a false statement to police.

He is being held in prison on $122,000 cash bail.
