Man killed in early morning shooting outside Newark-area tavern

A 26-year-old Wilmington man was killed in an early Saturday morning shooting in a shopping center parking lot near Newark, New Castle County Police said.


Police said officers responded to the Shoppes of Village Square on Marrows Road around 12:47 a.m. after a report of shots fired.


Police said Melvin Collins and one other person were shot. Collins was pronounced dead at the scene, which was located outside of Famous Bob's Tavern, where a crowd was gathered in the parking lot.


The second shooting victim, an unnamed man, was transported to a local area hospital and police said he is in stable condition.
