A man attempted to steal a car at a shopping center in Ogletown after falsely identifying himself as a police officer Monday afternoon, according to authorities.

At 1 p.m., a 20-year-old man was in his vehicle in the parking lot of the Salem Village Square Shopping Center when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up. A man came out of the vehicle and approached the victim and identified himself as a police officer, Delaware State Police said.

The suspect then advised the victim that he needed to take his vehicle, police said. The victim refused, then the suspect showed a handgun. The victim then drove off after seeing the gun. The victim was not injured.

The suspect never produced any credentials at any time, police said.

He was described as a black man, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall with an average build.

Police said there were no surveillance images available at this time.

They ask for anyone with information to contact Cpl. J. Aviola at (302) 633-5000.
