Police identify driver who died trapped in flames on I-495 Sunday night

Brandon Holveck,

Delaware State Police have identified the driver who died Sunday night in a crash on I-495 when they became trapped in a burning vehicle.

Melanie M. Toto, a 52-year-old from New Castle, was hit from behind while driving north on I-495 a mile south of Edgemoor Road in the Fox Point area shortly before midnight.

The crash sent Toto's vehicle out of control, and eventually into a grassy area along the highway. Police said the vehicle's gas tank exploded on impact and

Toto was trapped inside as flames engulfed the vehicle.

Police pronounced Toto dead at the scene.

Police initially had difficulty identifying the driver and their vehicle due to extensive damage from the fire. Police recovered a vanity tag that reads, "Raymond 9-18-66 - 01-30-08" and identified the vehicle as a blue Toyota four-door passenger vehicle.

The other driver involved, a 45-year-old Wilmington man, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
