Delaware State Police have identified the Wilmington man who was killed Tuesday morning after being hit by a pickup truck on Del. 273 as 20-year-old Lavon Stewart.
According to police, Stewart was trying to cross Del. 273 west of Churchmans Road in New Castle at about 6:45 a.m. when a Chevy Colorado driven by a 50-year-old New Castle man hit him.
The truck knocked Stewart to the ground in the left lane, police said. The driver of the Chevy stopped and waited for police.
Stewart was rushed to Christiana Hospital, where he later died. Police said he was not using a crosswalk and was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing. It's not yet known if he was impaired at the time.
The driver of the Chevy was not injured, and police do not believe speed or impairment were factors in the crash.
The wreck caused traffic delays throughout the morning commute, according to the Delaware Department of Transportation.
For much of the morning, the west lanes of Del. 273 were closed at Del. 58, with traffic getting by only on the right shoulder.
The crash was cleared almost three hours later, and the road reopened around 9:30 a.m.
