Police unable to identify truck driver who died in crash Wednesday night

A truck burst into flames after going off the road Wednesday night east of Laurel, according to Delaware State Police. 

The truck's driver, who was not identified by police, died in the crash, police said. Police only know that the truck is a later model Ford F-150 with an extended cab and was possibly silver.

The crash was reported at about 5 p.m., police said. The driver was traveling north on Fire Tower Road at a high speed when they failed to make a left curve, police said. The right-side tires of the truck went of the east edge of the road into the grass, police said. 

According to police The truck struck a large tree head-on. The impact of the tree penetrated completely through the engine and into the second row seats — trapping the driver —  and sent the truck on fire. Flames completely consumed the truck.

Fire Tower Road in the area of the crash was closed for more than two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared, police said.

The crash is being investigated by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. Police ask anyone with relevant information contact Troop 5 in Bridgeville at (302) 337-1090.
