A Wednesday morning shots fired investigation that began in Wilmington ended several miles away with a car crash near Claymont and the suspects escaping on foot, police said.

Delaware State Police continue to search for the suspects around Harvey Road, near Interstate 95, where the crash occurred just before noon. At one point, area residents were asked to shelter in place, according to several social media posts.

Harvey Road was also temporarily closed, but reopened before 1 p.m.

According to Wilmington and state police, the incident began near 6th and Washington streets in Wilmington when police received information about shots being fired.

The suspects fled in a car, which Wilmington police chased, a Delaware State Police spokesman said.

The car "fled into DSP jurisdiction" on I-95 and later crashed on Harvey Road after leaving the interstate. The suspects — police did not specify their gender or how many there were — ran from the car.

As of 2 p.m., they were still missing, state police said.

Wilmington police said the department will release more information about the incident when it becomes available.
