Starbucks, Checkers among businesses coming and going on Kirkwood Highway

Brandon Holveck - Delaware Online

Kirkwood Highway (Del. 2), stretching from Newark to Wilmington, is almost always a hub of activity with businesses coming and going.

With major projects in the works, including the redevelopment of the Prices Corner shopping centeranchored by Target, its landscape will be changing even more in the coming years.

For now, here is the latest on a few openings and closings along the road.

Starbucks

A new Starbucks on Kirkwood Highway is expected to open on Valentine's Day.

It will replace the existing Starbucks at the end of a small shopping strip near the corner of Kirkwood Highway (Del. 2) and Farrand Drive. The current location is scheduled to close on Feb. 10, according to employees at the store.

The new building, just next door in the Aldi and Planet Fitness parking lot, features a drive-thru and is significantly larger than the existing location.

It's the latest change in the shopping area, previously known as Farrand Center. Aldi and Planet Fitness replaced Best Buy in 2017 when the electronics store moved to the Christiana Fashion Center. Taco Bell and Wendy's have also recently completed renovations.

Best Buy anchored Farrand Center for more than 15 years after opening in 1990.

Checkers

Across from the new Starbucks, Kirkwood Highway recently lost a fast-food option.

The Checkers at 4303 Kirkwood Hwy. closed shortly after the start of the new year. It was the latest Checkers to open in Delaware, amid a wave of expansion beginning in 2016.

At the end of 2018, Checkers announced intentions to add up to six new restaurants in 2019. The announcement came after the company said in 2016 it could add 10 to 12 locations "in the next few years."

Three locations opened between 2016 and 2018 — adding to Delaware's longtime lone Checkers at 4302 N. Market St. in Wilmington. But expansion plans ultimately halted. The Kirkwood Highway Checkers is the only Delaware location to close, lasting slightly more than a year.

Checkers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Others

Two stores recently opened next to the Panera Bread on Kirkwood Highway near Duncan Road.

American Shaman CBD and Paparazzi Accessories have filled in the small strip, which features Mattress Warehouse and T-Mobile in addition to Panera Bread.

The Burger King near the shuttered Friendly's on Kirkwood Highway in Stanton recently reopened under new management. It closed midway through 2019.
