Esteban Parra,

An 18-year-old man was found shot early Tuesday near Wilmington's Baynard Village community.

Wilmington Police did not provide the victim's medical condition, other than to stay the teen was stable.

While there have been fewer people shot in Wilmington so far this year – when compared to the same time period last year – the percentage of teens shot has increased for the same time period.

Since the start of the year, 45% of the people shot in Wilmington have been under the age of 20. That's a jump when averaging the same time for the past five years. That five-year average comes out to 24%.

Wilmington officials did not explain why there was an increase in people of this age being shot.

"As with any shooting incident, our investigators seek to identify those responsible, and to prevent future violence," the city's police spokesperson said in a statement. "We also investigate possible connections between incidents. At this time, we are not able to offer further comment while this and other investigations are ongoing."

Tuesday's shooting occurred about 1:35 a.m. in the 2200 block of Washington St.

A portion of Washington Street was closed as officers investigated the scene, which had residents standing on porches looking at investigators.
