A 49-year-old man from Wilmington died after a crash that occurred when he tried to pass an SUV on his motorcycle Saturday afternoon, according to Delaware State Police.
The crash occurred at 3:17 p.m. at Bayside Drive and Dyke Branch Road, police said.
The motorcycle and a 2013 Ford Edge were traveling north on Bayside Drive, when as the Ford Edge began to turn left the motorcycle tried to pass on the left side, police said. The front right of the motorcycle collided with the left fender of the Ford Edge, police said.
The collision threw the driver from the motorcycle, police said. The driver and the motorcycle ended up in a ditch north of the intersection, police said.
Police said the driver of the motorcycle was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. The driver of the Ford Edge, a 47-year-old woman from Dover, was treated at the scene, according to police.
The identification of the victim is pending notification to next of kin.
The road was closed for about three and a half hours while police investigated.
