A 33-year-old man was killed Monday evening in northeast Wilmington, the first homicide in the city in 2021.

He was shot shortly before 6 p.m. in the 2800 block of North Claymont Street, in the Riverside neighborhood, according to Wilmington police.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he died, police said. Evidence markers were seen dotting the road at the scene Monday night.

The incident was the third shooting in Wilmington in the new year, and the second in the Riverside neighborhood. A 43-year-old man was shot roughly one block away on Jan. 2, in the 2900 block of Northeast Boulevard. Police listed him as stable.

A 33-year-old man was shot last Tuesday in West Center City, and also declared stable by police.

Last year, 169 people were shot in the city, the second-highest recorded by Delaware Online/The News Journal since the newspaper began tracking shootings in 2011.
